Late photographer Tony Figueira (1959 - 2017) was born in Huambo, Angola but moved to Windhoek in his early childhood. Figueira’s interest in photography took off after completing a degree in journalism from Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa, in 1984. After his studies, Figueira eventually left a career in the motor industry to pursue his love of photography, opening Studio 77 in 2004 in Windhoek. Studio 77 became a creative hub in Windhoek for many artists and photographers. Figueira’s photojournalist approach to photography is distinctive in his work and forms a large part of his oeuvre. However, Figueira also experimented with the abstract potential of photography.
Figueira's work was exhibited as part of StArt Art Gallery's group exhibition 'Look-see' in 2018.
